danielsThis past Friday, Rough House Promotions put together Green Bay Fight Night II. Main attractions to the first two shows in Green Bay in years have been the local Native American boxers. One in particular, Forest County Potawatomi’s Mark Daniels Jr. or Sagjewe Gises (Daniels’ Native American name meaning “Rising Sun”), continues to impress and bring boxing back to the northern sector of Wisconsin – part of the large movement of bringing boxing back to the state.

Daniels won his pro debut in April, at the Riverside Ballroom. On June 12th, he returned to the venue to face a tough Shawn Payne of Milwaukee in his second pro bout. Being a true fan favorite of the area, Daniels headlined the card.

Following the Red Corner Payne’s entrance, the excitement level hit it’s overwhelming peak, as Daniel’s made his way to the ring with a Native American Tribe themed entrance with drums, singing, and dancing to the ring. The entrance was cultural and purely masterful!

Once the bell rang, it was all BIZness. The Welterweight War began with both steady and powerful punchers exchanged hammers. Daniels was able to deliver that more lethal shots, pushing Payne into the ropes and hunch over to eliminate the shots coming from the taller Daniels. Daniels pressed through and dominated the 4 rounds of war. Scores were: 40-35, 40-36, 40-36 – All in favor of Daniels.

After the bout, I sat down with #NextGenChamp Daniels to talk about his journey, his future, his life. What a great young warrior, physically, spiritually, and mentally.

Other results from Green Bay Fight Night II:

Welterweight Division – Ira Frank suffered multiple cuts in an accidental clash of heads with Keith Tebear in brutal 1st Round. Despite Frank’s desire to continue, the doctor overruled for safety reasons. The match was ruled a No Contest.

Middleweight Division – Ricky Smith goes the distance with an indestructible Michael Pickett, scoring the Unanimous Decision. Scores: 40-35, 40-36, 40-34.

Welterweight Division – Daniel Denny pounds Chris Taylor for TKO1. Time of the stoppage: 1:31.

Light Heavyweight Division – Tyler Howard came up from Tennessee and inflicted pain on local favorite Eli Smith, scoring a 1st Round TKO. Time of the stoppage: 1:17.

Lightweight Division – Raeese Aleem remains undefeated as he disposes of Antoine Knight at :33 of the 3rd Round.

Welterweight Division – Kevin Cruz made quick work of Brian Otey with a TKO1 victory at 2:01.
